Swansea Assistant Manager Kevin Nugent's contract is set to expire in the summer and althought the striker is likely to return in his current coaching capacity next season, "Nuge" believes that it would make sense in registering as a player again. However, Nugent has admitted that should he be called upon for first-team action, he would be far more suited to his natural striking role...and not the position of centre-half that he was forced to play in last week's reserves outing.
After finally recovering from a frustrating injury, Nugent played his first football for over three months in Swansea's midweek reserves match against Bristol City - and found himself forced to play in the unfamiliar position of centre-back as an emergency. Despite taking the lead, Swansea went on to lose 8-1, with Nugent adding a cracking own goal to Bristol City's tally. "The team they had out could challenge for promotion in League One", Nugent told the Evening Post, "...never mind play against a side which had a 16-year-old, a couple of trialists and myself at centre-back!"
"I'm keen to stay on the coaching learning curve I'm on now and, if I am still here next year there would be no harm in keeping myself registered as a player". Should Nugent be granted his wish, he will be gearing up for his 19th and probably last professional season in his long career, but one things for sure...he won't be asking for a more defensive role!
