The Welsh Football Association have announced that Swansea legend John Toshack has been appointed as the new national team manager. Toshack beat both Philippe Troussier and Dean Saunders to land the position that he occupied overa decade ago and will take control of national affairs with immediate effect.
John Toshack appeared to be the popular choice amongst Welsh supporters and can offer 25 years worth of experience to his new position. Toshack began his managerial career at Swansea, where he took them from the fourth to the first division in a fantastic run of straight promotions. He then won the Spanish Primera Liga with Real Madrid in 1990 and has also enjoyed spells at Sporting Lisbon, Real Sociedad, Deportivo, St Etienne and Murcia.
Perhaps more importantly is the news that the Welsh squad themselves have backed the FA's decision after several threatened to retire following Wales' defeat to Poland if "the right man wasn't appointed". It is now up to Toshack to attempt to squeeze Wales into their first major competition since 1958 - realistically starting with the next European Championships.
