In a hugely contraversial 90 minutes, Swansea were defeated 1-0 in the first round proper of the FA Youth Cup last night. Just under 200 spectators were present at the Vetch Field as the Cherries took the lead and were then forced into some desperate defending in the dying minutes after two players were given their marching orders. Nevertheless, the visitors hung on to the victory and left Swansea contemplating a night of missed chances.
The visitors were reduced to ten men after just six minutes, when the referee sent off goalkeeper Andy Smallpiece, before a second player followed early in the second half. Despite having numerical advantage for virtually the whole game, Swansea could not break down the visitor's defence and eventually James Rowe, who has played first team football this season at the Fitness First Stadium, snatched the only goal of the game after a defensive error.
Therefore, Swansea's Youth side have failed at the first hurdle yet again, with a 4-2 defeat against Cheltenham knocking them out of the first round of the Youth Alliance Cup earlier this season. Bournemouth were entered into the second round draw and will now play Leyton Orient at home in round two.
