Ex-Swansea manager Brian Flynn appears set to take over the role as Welsh manager, following their 3-2 defeat to Poland on Wednesday night. Following the final whistle, Gary Speed announced his retirement from International football, suggesting that the Welsh midfielder is set to take an assistant manager's position and learn all he can from Flynn.
An announcement is expected in the next 48 hours with regards to the appointment, although not many Welsh fans will be too suprised by the final choice. At one point last week, Welsh bookmakers Jack Brown's stopped taking bets on fellow ex-Swan John Toshack taking on the role...but that appears to have subsided following the fact that it is virtually impossible for Wales to qualify from their tough group. Due to their poor position, the FAW have decided to take on an inexperienced coach like Speed and allow him time to grow into the role of Welsh manager.
And so Brian Flynn appears to have battled his way into the one positon that he admitted had always tempted him. Although Welsh supporters won't be blown away by his appointment, with qualification virtually ruled out, the prospect of moulding Gary Speed into a similar manager to Mark Hughes makes sense. Barring a large suprise, it appears that Flynn could be Welsh manager by the weekend.
