Swansea dumped Second Division Rushden and Diamonds out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory at the Vetch Field.

Lee Trundle, making his comeback after a month out injured, inspired the Swans and put them in front just before half-time. His strike partner Kevin Nugent held off two defenders in the box before squaring to Trundle whose low finish found the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Trundle had already gone close with two long-range efforts, one of which had grazed Paul Evans' upright.

Swansea were fortunate to have Trundle back as they missed numerous chances prior to the opening goal.

Showing that he can provide as well as score goals, Trundle repaid Nugent's assist after 58 minutes when he fed his partner who could not miss from close range.

But even Trundle was humbled by Swansea's third. Kieron Durkan stole the ball inside his own half before sprinting towards goal. His run was topped by an exquisite chip which sailed over Evans and into the top corner.

Despite dominating for long periods Swansea had keeper Roger Freestone to thank for keeping Rushden at bay.

A one handed first-half stop from a Stuart Gray pile-driver was topped by an even better save in the second half. Duane Darby's shot deflected mere yards from Freestone's goal but a strong hand turned the ball round the post.

Swansea boss Brian Flynn was happy to have made it through.

He said: "The hardest hurdle is the first round." Flynn also hailed Lee Trundle's performance, but was keen to credit the whole side for the win, insisting: "We're not a one man team." Opposite number Brian Talbot conceded his side were second best, saying, "We were well beaten. They wanted it more than us."
